Lewis Smith served as an engineer with Colonel James A. Sawyers' expedition to establish a wagon road between Nebraska and Virginia City, Montana Territory, in 1865. Records (1865-1927) include Smith's original survey notebook; typescript of his expedition diary; and his grandson Lewis K. Ferguson's research files concerning his efforts to place the wagon road on highway maps. Lewis H. Smith was born in Massachusetts about 1835. He moved to Kossuth County, Iowa, about 1856. In 1865 he was a member of an expedition, led by Col. James A. Sawyers, to establish a wagon road between Niobrara, Nebraska, and Virginia City, Montana Territory. After the expedition he returned to Iowa and by 1885 became a bank cashier.
